Friday, August 18th:

{Last Call} 11am – 2pm: Drawn to Nature: Start Your Own Expedition Sketchbook Blencowe inspires her students in the art of keeping a visual journal. Students will capture small moments of nature in a big way. The sketching sessions will encourage creative expression through various approaches and media. Students will record their impressions of the landscape, in the gardens, and along the river. Participants should bring a Stillman & Birn Zeta sketchbook (spiral or hard bound, any size) to first class. All other materials supplied. Geared to artists and non-artists. 6pm: Charter Oak Brewery Event Love beer? Ever wonder about its history? Why is an IPA called an IPA? Join Scott Vallely of Charter Oak Brewing as he brings his knowledge – & his beer – to this Hempsted brew-haha. Bring your thirst for knowledge & soak in the history we have on tap at the Hempsted Houses as you sample some fine brews & pick Scott’s brain about his favorite subject – beer! What could be a better way to start the weekend? Tickets are $25. Reservations are required as space is limited. Hempsted Houses, New London

10am: Shore Birds Canoe Trip Bring canoe or kayak, lunch, and supplies for a day on the water (bathing suit optional). Meet at 8am at Lieutenant River boat launch site on Rt. 156, Old Lyme. We will paddle towards Great Island and the remains of Griswold Point. – Old Lyme

Saturday 9am – 5pm and Sunday 9am – 3pm: Antique Marine Engine Exposition The transition from sail to engine power was a momentous event for the maritime industry and the world. Experience it firsthand at the 26th annual Antique Marine Engine Exposition at Mystic Seaport Saturday and Sunday, August 19-20, 2017. Collectors from around the country will show off full-size and miniature 19th- and early 20th-century marine engines and inboards, outboards, steam, gasoline, diesel, electric, and naphtha engines. More than 300 engines will be exhibited in the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard and many will be operated for your viewing and listening pleasure. A large selection of marine models will also be on display to delight the young at heart. Join us for this noisy, greasy, fun event! – Mystic Seaport
