Monday, January 4:
9am: Barnes & Noble’s My Favorite Teacher Contest provides middle and high school students across the country with the opportunity to tell their community how much their teachers are appreciated. 9:30 – 11am: Chickadees Explore the DPNC with your little one in our classic parent and child class. Activities, circle time, and time outside bring nature to life for your child! Ages 2-5, with a caregiver. $10 per nonmember. Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, Mystic.
10am – 10:45am: Nature Nursery Oh the places we’ll go and the animals we’ll meet through the works of Dr. Seuss. Each week we’ll read a book by this beloved author and use it as a fun way to learn about the world of animals which will inspire cool crafts and activities. Chances to meet some animal friends in person. Fee (one child and one adult): nonmembers $16/class. For children ages 2-3 years accompanied by an actively participating adult. Runs until 2/22. Wednesday, January 6:
8:30am – 4pm: Three Kings Day School Vacation Program When school is out the JCC is in! Join us for a fun-filled day of meeting new friends and playing games. Friday, January 8:
10am: Powder Ridge is participating in The World’s Largest Ski & Snowboard Lesson for first time riders and skiers! Join us as our ski and snowboard coaches introduce you to a great winter sport while making an attempt at the Guinness record! For this special event, you’ll need to register online to make your reservation. We do expect to sell This is not one giant lesson but many beginner lesson groups – with ski or snowboard – all taking place here at the Ridge. We are going after four records – largest single-venue ski lesson, largest single-venue snowboard lesson, largest multi-venue ski lesson and largest multi-venue snowboard lesson. 10am – 2pm: Ranger Nate at EverWonder Calling all scientists! Ranger Nate will be in the house today. Come visit and explore different animal furs with our favorite animal expert. EverWonder Children’s Museum, Newtown.
5 – 7pm: Harry Potter Hijinks Drop off your kids for a magical evening at the DPNC! The Harry Potter stories are steeped in nature. 6 – 8pm: Tween Night Out – Penguin Wishes Grab a friend and head down to the Pottery Factory, to enjoy a night of canvas painting! You will be given step-by-step instructions from one of our experienced and enthusiastic Creative Specialists. And you will leave with a beautiful creation that you can truly say you painted yourself! This event is designed for tweens 8 and older. $29 per tween. The Pottery Factory, Brookfield.
7 – 9pm: Glass Van Gogh – Snowman Bring your friends down to the Pottery Factory, along with your favorite bottle of wine or beverage, and enjoy an evening of wine glass painting of this cozy snowman design. You will be given step-by-step instructions from one of our experienced and enthusiastic Creative Specialists. And you will leave with two beautiful wine glasses that you can enjoy for years to come. 7:30pm: Step Afrika! founded in 1994, is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping – a percussive dance style traditionally practiced by African-American fraternities and sororities, and influenced by a variety of other dance and art forms. 10 – 11:30am: Saturday Morning Hike It’s a great day to get outside! Join us for an interpretive trail walk through the forests and fields. A knowledgeable DPNC educator will point out seasonal plants and animals. Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and bring a water bottle. Adults and older children. Mostly easy hiking through woodlands and wetlands with stone walls. If it’s snowy, bring snowshoes or skis. $10 per non-member. ALC Pafford Woods, Stonington.
10am – 12pm and 2 – 4pm: Space Race Build and race a LEGO brick spaceship or car. Recommended for ages 6 and up. $25 for each additional adult/child (includes Museum admission). 12pm: Jungle Book It’s a rock and roll party in the middle of the jungle with all your favorite party animals! A young orphan named Mowgli has been raised by animals his whole life, but the jungle is no longer safe for him and it is time for him to make his way back to his village. With the help of some unconventional friends Mowgli soon learns the true meaning of home and family. Our Children’s Theatre shows approximately run 75-80 minutes with a 10 minute intermission. 12pm and 1:30pm: In a Galaxy Kind of Close By Planetarium Show After you’ve visited the A Billion Bricks 3: Galactic Travels exhibition, join us for a Planetarium Show and take a tour of the constellations or planets in our galaxy. Learn about star stories in the sky, how to recognize common winter constellations, and which planets are made of rock or gas. Topics and content will vary each week. Programs begin promptly at noon and 1:30pm with limited seating. Doors will open 15 minutes before showtime; no late admissions, please. Recommended for ages 6 and up. 4pm: Free Family Concert Sonic Escape presents “Echoing Voices: A Musical History of America.” Travel the homelands of immigrants to hear the “echoing voices” of our country’s heritage. Through the story-telling power of music, imagine coming to America. Experience how the face of immigration changed, starting with the Dutch, Irish, and Germans, and evolving to the 21st Century.
